Application Procedure for National Membership

Membership in the IAU is open to countries and individuals.  The procedures for submission and approval of membership applications in the two categories are described in the Working Rules (§ II and III).  A brief summary of the procedures is given below.  Deadlines for proposals to be considered at the XXVIth IAU General Assembly in August 2006 are listed here.

An organization representing a country which considers applying for National Membership or National Membership with interim status to the IAU (normally an Academy of Science or equivalent; see the Working Rules for details) should write to the General Secretary at the IAU Secretariat, preferably at least 18 months in advance of a General Assembly.

Dues to the Union are paid annually by Member Countries.  These dues are defined by the Category of Adherence of each country, each category corresponding to defined number of Units of Contribution; National Members with interim status pay one-half Unit of Contribution annually.  The approved Units of Contribution are CHF (Swiss Francs) 3355, 3460 and 3580 for the years 2004, 2005 and 2006, respectively.  Contributions for the period 2007-2009 will be fixed by the XXVIth General Assembly in August 14-25, 2006 (Prague, Czech Republic).

The IAU Secretariat can be contacted for further information.
